The cone is what helps the Wood Pack ignite quickly, burn evenly, and deliver the predictable ~30-minute burn duration. You can place traditional firewood over the cone as well, up to 16 inches long so it fits within the fire pit bowl. If you will not be using a Wood Pack and want more room for firewood, you can start the fire without the cone (remove it before any burning begins). It can also be removed for cleaning. The center cone is designed to create optimal burning conditions and airflow. The cone is what helps the Wood Pack ignite quickly, burn evenly, and deliver the predictable ~30-minute burn duration. You can place traditional firewood over the cone as well, up to 16 inches long so it fits within the fire pit bowl. Smoke level is dependent upon the wood used and other varying burn conditions. If you plan on starting your fire with natural cut firewood, first remove the center cone from the Fire Pit. Stack kindling, newspaper, or a commercially-available fire starter in the center of the Fire Pit and place your larger pieces of wood around the fire starter. Be sure that the firewood doesn't stick over the edge of the Fire Pit as this affects secondary combustion, which results in more smoke. Please ensure that the Fire Pit Ash Pan is cleaned after every use. We hope this helps. -TIKI Brand

Thanks for the question! Smoke and ash level in general is dependent upon the wood used (we recommend our Wood Pack or dry, seasoned wood) and other varying burn conditions. This is why we created the Wood Pack along with our patent-pending airflow technology in the Fire Pit to create a low smoke fire when used together. Please ensure that when using firewood, the firewood sits below the holes near the top of the Fire Pit as this would affect secondary combustion.
